Our Story

From a Shared Passion

Grand Velvet Room was born from a love of refined dining and the social ritual of poker. Our founders, lifelong friends with backgrounds in hospitality and the art of the card table, imagined a venue where both passions could coexist without compromise. They spent years searching for the right space, one that could hold the energy of a late-night supper club and the quiet focus of a serious card room.

The result is a place where the clink of fine glassware and the soft riffle of cards belong to the same evening. We built Grand Velvet Room for people who appreciate a beautifully plated dish as much as a well-played hand, and who understand that the best nights are the ones that move easily from dinner into deeper conversation and friendly competition.

A Philosophy of Elegance

We believe that a great evening combines exceptional food, warm hospitality, and the thrill of a well-played hand. Every detail, from the weight of the cutlery to the felt on our poker tables, is chosen to make face-to-face interaction feel effortless. This is not an online experience or a gambling hall; it is refined social play in a room designed for it.

The Dual Concept

Two Passions, One Stage

Grand Velvet Room is designed as a single, continuous evening. Guests arrive for dinner, settle into the rhythm of the room, and then move naturally to the card lounge when the mood shifts.

Dining First

Our kitchen serves contemporary Australian cuisine with a focus on seasonal ingredients. The menu is designed by chefs who understand that a great meal is the foundation of a great evening. The dining room features sculptural velvet seating, low lighting, and the kind of unhurried service that lets conversation breathe.

Poker After Dark

As the evening progresses, the card lounge comes alive with friendly poker games. Our dedicated poker tables are set in a separate lounge that feels connected to the dining room but quieter, more focused. Live poker nights are hosted regularly, with hosts who know how to welcome both new and experienced players.

One Seamless Experience

Guests can enjoy dinner and then move to the poker room without leaving the venue. Reservations are available for both dining and poker, and our staff are trained to guide guests through the evening, from the first course to the final hand. There is no pressure to play; the lounge is as much a place to watch and enjoy as it is to sit at the table.

Venue Design

A Study in Velvet and Brass

The interior features sculptural velvet seating, curved architectural forms, and smoked glass. Dark timber and brushed metal accents ground the space, while dramatic pendant lighting creates intimate pools of light over each table. The effect is cinematic without being theatrical, intimate without being cramped.

The Card Lounge

A dedicated card lounge is connected naturally to the dining room, featuring complete poker tables crafted from dark wood with green felt. The lounge is designed for comfort and focus, with chairs that support long sessions and lighting that keeps the cards clear without glare. It is a room that respects the game and the people who play it.

Our Journey

The Evolution of Grand Velvet Room

2019: The Vision

Concept development and venue acquisition. The founders secured the Pitt Street space and began the long process of turning a raw interior into a room that could hold both a dining room and a card lounge.

2021: Opening

Grand Velvet Room opens its doors to the public. The first guests arrive for dinner, and the first poker evening sells out within a week. The room begins to find its regulars.

2023: Expansion

Card lounge expanded with additional poker tables. The lounge grows to accommodate more players while keeping the same intimate feel, and the kitchen introduces a late-night menu designed for the card room.
